Digipolis is the telematics partner of the Cities of Ghent and Antwerp (Belgium). Early 2003, the Cities of Ghent and Antwerp and their respective social service departments, decided to work together on telematics. „Digipolis‟, started. On 1 October 2003 Digipolis became operational as the new local intergovernmental organisation for telematics; all of the partners involved transferred their telematics competences to Digipolis.
Close and intense cooperation on telematics between the two largest Flemish cities creates important benefits. Synergetic effects assure that a lot can be realised with the input of relatively few means. This is crucial, given the rising pressure on the budget of local governments.
Created opportunities are: sharing of know-how, an optimal usage of technical means and personnel, bulk discount thanks to joined purchasing, cooperation on future challenges such as e-government. The public partnership that Digipolis is, allows the Cities of Ghent and Antwerp to play a key role in the expansion of digital services in Belgium.
As a local intergovernmental organisation, Digipolis can speak on behalf of the public partners involved. It can operate autonomously and flexible, which is crucial in the fast evolving ICT-sector. Digipolis develops, implements and supports software applications for the City of Ghent.
Besides that, Digipolis finds it important to give professional support on using various applications and on a well-considered management of applications. This can be the case for purchased applications as well as applications developed by Digipolis. Also, Digipolis offers all-round ICT-support. This is a service package with a very large scope: purchasing and installation of pc‟s/laptops, servers and other hardware, management of telephone systems, network and system management, management of the network of photocopiers and helpdesk support.
